The well-known hymn “How Firm a Foundation” was published in 1787 in John Rippon’s A Selection of Hymns. Rippon was the pastor of Carter Lane Baptist Church in London where the hymn’s likely author, Richard Keene, was the song leader. The text originally included seven stanzas but hymnals today include anywhere from three to five stanzas. But they begin this way: “How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in God’s excellent Word!”
The image of a “firm foundation” is a powerful one throughout the scriptures. For example, in Isaiah 28:16 we read, “Therefore says the Lord, ‘See, I am laying in Zion a foundation stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation.’” And in 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, the apostle Paul writes, “I laid a foundation on which others have built. But we must each be careful how we build because Christ is our only foundation.”
The photo above shows the concrete foundations recently poured in the Grace Church parking lot. Foundations are not very interesting or beautiful on their own. However, without their “firm” support, the six new micro homes would not be sustainable. Likewise, the support of the congregation and our many partners on this project has made this new project possible and enduring.
In the coming months, we will see the micro home units installed and the supporting infrastructure built. Then we will have the privilege of welcoming our new neighbors. All of this happens thanks to the firm foundation of both physical supports under the homes and the faithful and generous support of our members and friends.
